A brief history

Boasting a long past, settlements have existed on the site of Philippopolis for more than six thousand years, with archaeological digs unearthing relics dating back as far as the Chalcolithic Age.

Philip's city (or Plovdiv as we now know it), originally built on three hills, was extended in the Hellenistic period (359 – 336 BC) by the example of ancient towns like Miletus, Ephesus, Alexandria and Olynthus and continued during the reign of Alexander the Great.

After the Roman conquest in AD 46, Plovdiv became part of the Roman Empire as Trimontium. In the centuries that followed, it was invaded by the Goths, occupied by the Pechenegs, partially converted into a fortress in the Byzantine–Bulgarian wars and conquered by the Ottomans.

Points of interest

With an extensive collection of colourful 19th-century house museums, galleries, churches, and music and art festivals, a few people realise the scale of Plovdiv before coming here. With so much to see and experience, you could easily spend a day or two exploring in between your dental appointments. Here’s a handful of places you can’t afford to miss.

The Roman Amphitheatre

Crafted in AD 2 during the reign of Emperor Trajan, Plovdiv's Amphitheatre would have been used for government meetings and to put on musical shows and poetry recitals for more than 7000 spectators. Nowadays, it's Bulgaria's most magical venue for open-air events, theatre plays, operas and concerts.

King Simeon's Garden

A spectacular view to witness is the Singing Fountains impressing with light and water effects on a summer Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening.

The Historical Museum, housed in a gorgeous mansion built in 1848 by one of the greatest masters for that time, Hadzhi Georgi Hadzhiiski, traces the historical past of Plovdiv from the Bulgarian National Revival Epoch and early Ottoman period (15th to 17th century) up to the present.

Dzhumaya Mosque is for connoisseurs of architectural grace and is open for modestly dressed visitors to experience a slice of its history dating back to 1364. When visiting, look up and admire the masonry widely practised in the Balkans before the arrival of the Ottomans.

Get a different look at Plovdiv from Bunardzhika, the second highest hill, 234 meters, drawing its name from the Turkish word Bunardzhik for well, supposedly because of the many water sources around. Alleys, stairs, and waterfalls lead to a magical fountain. The legend says that if a foreigner drinks from it, one will stay in Plovdiv forever.

The Rowing Canal

Long at 2200 meters and wide at 120 meters, the Rowing Canal is a fresh escape for everyone. Locals and tourists enjoy picturesque bicycle lanes and walkways along the canal. If that does not sound like you, there is plenty of space under the shade to enjoy picnics, concerts and festivals or a mouthwatering lunch in one of the many restaurants.

To give a bit of background, Nebet Tepe is the birthplace of ancient Plovdiv. Evidence of the oldest settlements dating back to the 6th century BC makes Nebet Tepe a monument with cultural-historical importance. The archaeological complex still keeps many secrets under its surface, and specialists are yet to uncover its treasures.

Kapana

The word kapana in Bulgarian means "trap", but there's nothing sinister in its name. It's just a way to describe the magical labyrinth of cobbled streets full of galleries, museums, cafes, bakeries, quirky restaurants and the most lavish examples of Plovdiv’s 19th-century architecture.
